Opening Activity - Game Night

On Wednesday, April 24, the Hustle PHX team, powered by AmeriCorps AZ, further continued on the journey previously started, in which 16 justice-involved youth were selected for the purpose of becoming the next generation of (restorative) Hustlers through the all-new YEP 101 course.

The team opened up with a quick check-in to see if the class remembered which week we were on. After that we transitioned into the topic of the night, which was Understanding Your Financial Strategy. For this topic, the team actually took the time to play a game with the cohort called CASHFLOW: a game by Rich Dad Poor Dad author Robert Kiyosaki. This game is an educational board game that teaches financial literacy concepts such as: passive income, budgeting and investing(e.g. A financially literate hybrid of Monopoly and The Game of Life).

Game Night Fun Begins

There were three tables, each consisting of: a game of CASHFLOW, several youth and one team member; with one member of the team floating around, offering assistance where needed. The team ran through some instructions regarding setup and gameplay and then the games began. As the games progressed, it was nice to see the youth applying and/or expounding upon information that most of them just learned the previous week. You could hear them having discussions about things like stocks, assets, and business partnerships. While there may have initially been some confusion(as can be the case when learning a new board game), it was an overall fun time and educational experience. At the end of the night, the team and cohort were instructed to keep track of their progress for the sake of continuing the following week; the cohort was dismissed, and everyone straightened up the classroom.

Game Night - Closing Thoughts

While the team may have been instructing the cohort and trying to help them get out of the rat race in the game, what’s a way that you as an individual or a society can help them in real life?

Also, stay tuned for the continuation and climax of the games next week!
