Pitch Night Walkthrough

On Wednesday May 22, 2024, the Hustle PHX team, powered by AmeriCorps AZ, continued their journey with 12 justice-involved youth, becoming the next generation of (restorative) Hustlers through the all new YEP 101 course.

The topic of this week was Pitch Night Walkthrough, in which the cohort took turns practicing their pitches. Each youth would go up, present their pitch, and then receive feedback and advice from the team and also each other.

It was a fun, productive and informative night in which each youth was able to further develop their public speaking skills. They received feedback and advice, serving as a form of encouragement and fuel for refining their pitches. Feedback and advice were given in the forms of:

  • Positive feedback (i.e. What was done well?)
  • Negative feedback (i.e. What needed to be worked on?)
  • Time (i.e. How close or far away they were from the ideal time)
  • Filler words (i.e. ahs, ums, huhs etc.)

Hustle PHX 202 Pitch Night

Half of the cohort went up first, there was a brief intermission and then the remaining half went up. For the intermission, food and drinks were provided for the cohort, team and site staff. It was a nice and fun time of fellowship, that helped simulate the official pitch night, and also gave the remaining half of the cohort some extra time to prepare. In the end, the cohort completed a quiz, practiced their pitches and completed some extra material in preparation for pitch night. Extra information was given concerning pitch night and then the cohort were dismissed.

Closing Thoughts

Due to delays in the schedule, the cohort has been allotted another week of pitch practice. And so in order to not sound repetitive, there will be no story covering the next week. However, I would like to inform you all, since the night has already passed, that refining has been done, and improvements have been made. So stay tuned for the official Pitch Night story! And although everyone may not be able to present, let’s still cheer on and support these youths as they approach the finish line of this course.
